Language and Technology

Human beings’ capacity to create comes to the edge of the unimaginable. The histories of art, architecture and engineering have left us examples of structures that defy all kinds of laws. This is an indication of what we are capable of achieving as a species.

Generally any initiatives to create giant structures are often automatically related to architecture, but as we’ll see in this edition of LARMAGAZINE, it’s not always the case. While it is undeniable that the artists who approach these types of projects must have certain knowledge about architecture, their intentions often evidently distance themselves from it. We will begin by
recognizing that monumentally in artistic manifestations has always been explored. Beginning with the spectacular pictorial "interventions"; of prehistoric man in Altamira and Lascaux, it’s possible to draw the line of development from this type of initiatives in practically all the epochs of the history of the humanity. An example of these are the gigantic stained-glass windows of innumerable Gothic cathedrals; Or later the frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. There are many examples, but our task in this edition was to compile the outstanding examples in contemporary

art. Before delving into the current edition of LARMAGAZINE, it’s essential to mention, briefly, the work of modern artists such as El Lissitzky, Antoine Pevsner or Constantin Brancusi, who opened the door to a new way of thinking about monumental sculpture. Artists such as Richard Serra, Christo and Jean Claude, Tomás Saraceno and James Turrell, to name just a few, have become basic references to this type of artistic solution in recent times.

It is with the predecessors of this level that on this occasion we will show you a selection of portfolios of contemporary artists that carry their results to the extreme, drawing on knowledge about engineering and architecture, but always with an artistic intention.
