This Painting II

Generally, every theme we choose for each edition of LARMAGAZINE is intended towards developing something further. We like to think of each volume as an opening line for a larger dialogue with our readers/users. In the case of Violent Contexts (.020), we followed with Peaceful Contexts (.021). In fact, our very first two App based editions were two parts of one that included the best of our previously published pieces in PDF format. It’s a type of publishing style we don’t usually recur to but our last issue, This Painting, was one that demanded a follow up; maybe even a third, fourth or fifth.

We know that art, like any other aspect of human life, is in constant evolution. There’s moments of tranquility, but in terms of contemporary art, particularly in painting, we find excitement and intrigue for the fast paced changes we observe. It may be that the strength of this practice may be a reaction to the unsurmountable technological advances; ones that may very well be born out of artistic endeavours. We can perceive the revival of various past movements and techniques. In this edition we present the work of Valentina D’ Amaro; Esteban Peña; Stephen Baker; Hai-Hisn Huang; Loie Hollowell; Frank Nitsche and Beatriz González, who is also in our Recommended Exhibitions section for her retrospective at Kunst Werke in Berlin. Without a doubt, one of the year’s most anticipated exhibitions. We also recommend our readers to visit Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power at Brooklyn Museum; and Neo Rauch: Aus Dem Boden/ From the Floor at Des Moines Art Center. Our special guest is Felipe Santander, who by the use of synthetic materials, creates out-of-this-world images.

On a separate note, with this issue we have the great pleasure of welcoming Dominique Suberville as our Editor in Chief. A Mexican artist with a masters in sociology, she joins our team adding a critical eye, a sense of renovation, and a fresh point of view. She contributes a fantastic interview with curator and former Associate Director for Marlborough Chelsea, one of the foremost galleries of contemporary art (particularly in painting), Vera Neykov. Furthermore, she shares with us a forward for Stephen Baker’s portofolio.

By welcoming Dominique, we begin a new phase with some important changes to the magazine. New sections, new articles, and a new design. To get an indepth look at this exciting new chapter, follow us on social media where we will be sharing some insights into our upcoming work. Please continue to share your comments and suggestions at info@lar-magazine.com; and as always, we hope you enjoy this issue as much as we did producing it.
