Catalina Restrepo, talking about LARMAGAZINE @ Epic Queen Monterrey

Recently, Catalina Restrepo spoke about LARMAGAZINE at Epic Queen Monterrey’s  Chapter 20. She talked about the origins of the project, about how it had transformed from a simple PDF supported in Issuu; into the interactive app that it is nowadays.

She also talked about the the characteristics of the magazine and how in their editions slide shows with an infinity of images, videos, interactive games, scrolling texts, audio archives among other things, may be included. Catalina also questioned the fact that there are not many magazines such as this one in the visual arts field in Latin America, when the world of appmagazines is not a new one to explore and art, is constantly pushing the boundaries of technology. This makes us think why are there still upcoming digital editorial projects that stick to the PDF idea, when there are so many technological tools to create more forums, to give a more complete information and to bring the reader closer to the contents? For LARMAGAZINE this part is fundamental, it is very important for us to keep up with the evolution of how to present contents, to use these type of tools in benefit of arts, to be aware of how people read now and how can we unfold these types of contents that by nature, mainly in the artistic field, are usually complex.

Another important issue that Catalina mentioned in her conference, was the power of collaborative networks, which she has been building up for over ten years and have allowed her to generate the contents that build what LARMAGAZINE represents today. She suggested the public that if they want to start a new project they must -either have a lot of money to invest in it- or invest in create collaborative networks. Regarding to this, she mentioned the importance of making friends instead of worrying so much about getting contacts. Friends are the people who are always more willing to help, and the best way to make friends is thinking about the other one’s needs first and coming up with a product that somehow help more people. She also insisted on how making friends take time and effort but in her own words “It’s always worth it since it’s the only investment with a 0% rate of loss”.

Here are the top 10 lessons that LARMAGAZINE have taught Catalina, which she shared at the conference.

LESSON 1: Persistence

LESSON 2: Patience

LESSON 3: Hold on to your achievements so you don’t fall all the way down from your failures

LESSON 4: Rely on the works of others, it doesn’t matter if that represents a risk taken.

LESSON 5: Experience doesn’t mean much. The person that is good in what she/he does,  has been that way from the very beginning.

LESSON 6: Everything is perfectible. Do the best you can, you just need to start.

LESSON 7: Try to see the potential for being friends in people, not contacts. It takes time to make good friends.

LESSON 8: Remarkable things don’t just happen immediately. Fame is not only fifteen minutes away.

LESSON 9: Success, like any other concept, is relative and shouldn’t be a burden.

LESSON 10:  Be prepared in case failure comes, and if it does, accept it with love and start over.

IN SUMMARY: Be good to yourself; be faithful to your own principles; respect and value each other’s work and above all, create something that can be helpful to others in the field that you know best, in the one that you’re good at or the field that you want more of.
