What is the sound of fall? What is the taste of a word? What is the sound of the color blue? When one sense stimulates another and transforms it into a new sensation it’s called synesthesia.
Using the five senses, Erick Meyenberg focuses mainly on sight and sound in Re Mayor No Es Azul, his exhibition taking place at Museo Amparo. The title was taken from a quote neurologist Oliver Sacks’ patient told him, explaining that "D Mayor is not blue, but yellow". Meyenberg translates topics such as: psychological values, time periods, racial taxonomies, botanical data, military emblems, pedagogical ideas and historical research for those incapable of synesthetic experiences.
In the lobby area, Meyenberg presents the installation Incluso si es otoño (2018) in which he collaborated with landscape designer and gardener Chris Shea at the garden Haudenschild in San Diego, California. He used the garden’s work log to create a partiture from it. The artist addresses the rhythms of life and death, the living’s fragility and strength, and the fear and astonishment of the rhythms of life and nature while creating a synesthetic experience.
In Gallery 1, The spectator may see the installation’s sound coding. Another recurring theme is politics, particularly in his piece: Estudio taxonómico comparativo entre las castas de la Nueva España y las del México Contemporáneo (Comparative taxonomic study between the castes of New Spain and Contemporary Mexico) to show different realities. He addresses racism and hierarchies during the Mexican colonization. Meyenberg depicts ratios with colors according to different castes’ color percentages.
In Meyenberg’s first individual catalogue, first presented in New York, The wheel bears no resemblance to a leg, he investigates the body, education, history and aesthetics. He’s currently working on two books as well. Meyenberg demonstrates diverse knowledge about the senses and their symbolisms. He uses drawings, videos, maps, collages and installations to convey his meaning. The work is incredibly enriching; anyone who can should go see it. Meyenberg’s exhibition will run from January 18th to May 18th, 2020.

Erick Meyenberg is from Mexico City and studied at the National School of Plastic Arts at the UNAM (ENAP). Between 2005 and 2009, he completed his Master’s of Visual Arts at the University of the Arts in Berlin, Germany (UDK, Berlin). There, he was mentored by German artist Rebecca Horn. Meyenberg’s work belongs in notable collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art University (MUAC-UNAM), the Amparo Museum, the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA), Fundación Telefónica México and the Benetton Foundation (Italy). In addition, he has participated in numerous international group exhibitions.
